WHAT CAN WE WIN TOGETHER?
United, thousands of 1199SEIU members across the country have achieved affordable healthcare, secure retirement, job security, access to training and education opportunities, childcare, and so much more. Now, it’s our turn!
Respect & a Voice
Without a union, management has the final say in everything. With 1199SEIU, members have a real voice and are respected. Management has to sit down with employees and negotiate wages and benefits in a written contract. Worker-management committees meet regularly to address working conditions and patient care.
“I have been an 1199er for 28 years, and I have a voice.”
Sheron Simmons, RN
Downtown Brooklyn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
Affordable Healthcare
Across the country, thousands of 1199SEIU members have fought for and won affordable healthcare for themselves and their families by standing together.
“Having four children and being married, 1199’s health insurance has been nothing but exceptional. Never having to pay a copay, no deductibles, medication being all taken care of, hospital stays, ICU visits, ER visits.”
Scott Rider
Nuvance Putnam Hospital
A Strong Pension
1199SEIU hospital workers have achieved the dignity of a strong pension by standing together, achieving retirement security for themselves and their families.
“A pension with 1199 is for a lifetime, versus if you have a 401K account, that goes out. It’s guaranteed every month for a certain time, but once that money runs out—it runs out.”
Daniel Midouin, Anesthesia Technician
Good Samaritan Hospital
Continuing Education
Many of us working in healthcare either want to advance our careers, or are required to take regular classes to keep up our license. But often we find that our lives are too busy or the classes are too expensive. That’s why 199SEIU members have established a wide range of training and education opportunities.
“Not having to worry about how expensive it is to complete your Nurse Practitioner degree…the union gives you the motivation that you can actually obtain that because you’re not worried about the financial responsibility.

Real Job Security
Those of us who work in healthcare want to keep working at our jobs for years to come. But as healthcare workers without a union, we are “at-will” employees, which means management can do whatever they want whenever they want. 1199SEIU healthcare workers have won significant benefits, which kick if we are laid off.
“The union helps us, they protect us. Without them, a lot of us probably wouldn’t be employed right now.”
Karen Martin, CNA
Delmar Center for Rehab and Nursing
Childcare
Our members have negotiated quality child care and youth programs for our families. These innovative programs help children throughout their whole lives—from just after birth, all the way to college, and at little or no-cost to us!
“My children can go to sleep-away camp, and the union covers it in full…for both of my children, it’s from ages 9-15. They go and they have a great experience for three weeks.”
